Chronicles of Qur’anic Studies

Chronicles of Qur’anic Studies is an international, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal that investigates the institutional and social lives of Qur’anic meanings.

The journal occupies the scholarly space between Qur’anic Studies, Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, and the Social Sciences. It was established to address a recurring gap in existing scholarship: Qur’anic studies frequently end with textual, hermeneutical, or historical findings, while social-scientific studies of Muslim life may treat the Qur’an only as a general religious background.

Chronicle of Qur’anic Studies brings these two domains into sustained conversation.

The journal studies how Qur’anic values and interpretations are produced, authorized, mediated, circulated, institutionalized, practiced, negotiated, contested, transformed, or resisted across different historical and contemporary settings.

Its central concern is therefore not simply the meaning of Qur’anic texts but the processes through which Qur’anic meanings become socially authoritative and institutionally consequential.

The journal encourages scholarship capable of tracing relationships among Qur’anic sources, interpretive traditions, actors, institutions, media, technologies, publics, practices, and consequences. Particular attention is given to research that combines Qur’anic depth with strong theoretical, historical, institutional, or empirical analysis.

The journal welcomes contributions from Qur’anic Studies, tafsīr studies, Religious Studies, sociology, anthropology, political science, public policy, education, economics, philanthropy studies, media studies, digital religion, organizational studies, and related fields.

It is committed to globally engaged scholarship while treating Muslim intellectual traditions and experiences from the Global South as potential sources of theory rather than merely sites of data collection.
