Copyright and Licensing

1. Copyright Holder

Authors retain the copyright to articles published in the Journal of Educational Innovation in Science and Technology (JEIST). Copyright is not transferred to the journal or publisher.

The copyright holder must be identified clearly in the OJS metadata, on the article webpage, and in the PDF using the following format:

Copyright © [Year of Publication] [Author’s Name or Names of All Authors]

If OJS provides only one copyright-holder field, the names of all authors should be entered in the order shown in the article. The journal or publisher should not be named as the copyright holder unless all authors have signed a separate written copyright-transfer agreement.

2. Right of First Publication

By submitting a manuscript and approving its publication, the authors grant JEIST the right of first publication and a non-exclusive right to:

  • publish the article as the version of record;
  • identify JEIST as the original publisher;
  • host and distribute the article through the journal website;
  • supply article metadata to indexing services, repositories, libraries, and digital preservation services;
  • edit, typeset, convert, and archive the article for publication purposes; and
  • maintain long-term electronic access to the article.

Granting the right of first publication does not prevent authors from using, developing, depositing, or sharing their work under the terms of the applicable license.

3. Article License

All JEIST articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

The license must be identified in the OJS metadata, on the article webpage, and in the PDF using the following statement:

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

The CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license allows users to:

  • read, download, copy, and share an article;
  • redistribute the article in any medium or format;
  • adapt, transform, or build upon the material; and
  • use the article for educational, research, and other non-commercial purposes.

Reuse is subject to the following conditions:

  1. Attribution: Users must give appropriate credit to the authors, cite the article and original publication source, provide a link to the license, and indicate whether changes were made.
  2. NonCommercial: The article and any derivative material may not be used for commercial purposes without prior written permission from the copyright holder.
  3. ShareAlike: Material adapted, transformed, or developed from the article must be distributed under the same CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license.
  4. No Additional Restrictions: Users may not apply legal terms or technological measures that prevent others from exercising the rights permitted by the license.
4. Commercial Use

The CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license does not automatically permit commercial use. Anyone wishing to use an article or part of an article for a commercial purpose must obtain written permission from the copyright holder.

A permission request should identify:

  • the material to be used;
  • the form and purpose of the proposed use;
  • the medium or product in which the material will appear;
  • the intended distribution; and
  • the person or organization making the request.

JEIST may assist in forwarding the request to the authors, but the copyright holder retains the authority to grant or refuse commercial permission.

5. Author Depositing and Sharing

Authors may deposit and share:

  • the submitted manuscript;
  • the accepted manuscript; and
  • the published version of record.

These versions may be deposited in an institutional repository, disciplinary repository, personal website, academic profile, or scholarly network. Any shared version must include:

  • the authors’ names;
  • the article title;
  • the name of the Journal of Educational Innovation in Science and Technology;
  • the volume, issue, year, and page range;
  • the DOI or a link to the version of record, where available; and
  • a statement identifying the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license.

Authors are encouraged to share the version of record published by JEIST or provide a link to it so that citations and metadata remain accurate.

6. Third-Party Material

Third-party material, including figures, photographs, maps, instruments, tables, scales, or extended quotations, is covered by the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license only when this is stated expressly.

Authors are responsible for:

  • determining the copyright status of third-party material;
  • obtaining written permission before publication where required;
  • providing accurate attribution and source information;
  • complying with the terms of the original license; and
  • supplying evidence of permission when requested by the editor.

When a figure caption, table note, or other notice states that copyright belongs to another party or that reuse is restricted, users must seek permission directly from the relevant copyright holder.

7. Author Responsibility

Authors are responsible for ensuring that the manuscript:

  • is original;
  • does not infringe copyright, privacy, confidentiality, or other rights;
  • contains no material used without the required permission;
  • provides accurate citations and attribution; and
  • has been approved by all authors for publication under the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license.

If a copyright concern is raised, the journal may investigate the matter, request an explanation or evidence of permission, correct the article, remove specific material, publish a notice, or retract the article, depending on the seriousness of the breach.

8. OJS Metadata

The OJS metadata for each article must include the following information:

  • Copyright Holder: [Author’s name or names of all authors]
  • Copyright Year: [Year in which the article is published]
  • License: Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International
  • License Abbreviation: CC BY-NC-SA 4.0
  • License URL: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/
  • Copyright and License Statement: Copyright © [Year of Publication] [Author’s Name]. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

This information must appear consistently in the article metadata, abstract page, article webpage, and PDF. The CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license icon may be displayed with the statement and linked to the official license page.
